Copyright update & another story complete!
Happy Summer everyone! 🌸
I don't now what the weather is like where you all live, but Summer has come with a vengeance here in the midwest U.S. and it is sooo hot here. Anyway, this is just going to be a brief update. In my last post, I mentioned feeling overwhelmed at not knowing how to go about copyrighting my work. I have decided that since I have multiple stories written already, I am going to register them as a group of unpublished works first, then release them into the wild on self-publishing platforms. I've learned that if I copyright a group of unpublished works, I can do so for up to 10 literary works. So, since I have already written multiple books, I chose that option. Doing this should not impact the copyright validity if I publish my works at a later date. I would have come back with an update about this sooner, but when I was actually going to submit the form and payment for copyright, I found out that the price for copyrighting a group of works has increased and I didn't have enough money saved.
So, I'm back to waiting on that front lol. But! In the months since my last post, I've written another story, making my total number of completed stories 5, and I have already gotten started on a 6th. *happy dances*
Like I mentioned in another post, I want to keep this fun, so I've pretty much thrown out all tentative plans of publishing dates and am just focusing on churning out stories. I think once I get to ten and finish all the edits for them, I will go ahead and submit for the copyright. Then I will work on a publishing plan. Going about it this way actually makes me feel less overwhelmed. While I would like to get my stories out there already, I think doing it this way will help me in the long run. Having multiple stories already written will allow me to have a publishing plan with specific dates for each story for the full year I choose to publish. Then while those stories are already ready to go, I can then use that year to work on the following year's stories. Will I always try to write and publish 10 stories in a year, every year? No. However, depending on the length, I would at least like to publish four per year. Full length novels will of course be published at a much slower rate.
My stories tend to be the lengths of novelettes and novellas. Short stories are darn near impossible for me to write because I lean more on the long-winded side of things. And full length novels tend to overwhelm me even when I have a fully realized plot 😒. So, novelette and novella it is then lol. I know there is no set standardized word count that constitutes either a novelette or novella. It tends to change depending on who you ask. So here is what works for my own understanding:
Short story: anything under ~7000 words
Novelette: 7000 to ~20,000 words
Novella: 20,000 to 40,000 words
Novel: anything over 40,000 words
As of right now, I currently have 4 novelettes and 1 novella.
Well, that's all for today. I'm going back into the writing trenches. I'm hoping I can fill my summer with as much writing as I can because once mid August hits, my job amps up again and I don't have as much free time.
Happy writing to you if you are :)
